The holiday season is upon us, and most of us are planning on spending many days celebrating with our loved ones. But what about those among us, especially young children and teenagers, who don’t have a family or permanent home to call their own? As the month of November comes to a close, we reflect on National Adoption Day which lead to 229 adoptions being finalized in Maricopa County this year.
Reflecting on November’s National Adoption Day in Arizona
National Adoption Day, an annual event now in its 18th year, was created to spotlight the 110,000 children in foster care across the country waiting to find their permanent homes and be adopted by loving families. Last year, almost 4,700 kids nationwide were adopted during the one-day event.
If you are interested in becoming a foster or adoptive parent in Arizona, there are a number of great resources available to you, including the Arizona Department of Child Safety. According to DCS, there are currently over 6,300 children in foster care in the state of Arizona.
How You Can Help Arizona Foster Care Children
Even if you can’t provide foster care or a forever home for a child through adoption, you can contribute in other ways, such as donating time to an organization helping troubled youths. Other contributions include volunteering to serve as an advocate for children in the court system, or donating resources to a foster-care organization or charity that supports children and families. As an added bonus to already feeling good about this deed, lawmakers created a tax credit ($500 for individuals; $1,000 for couples) to serve as an extra incentive.
